What is a dental implant?
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root placed into the bone of the jaw in place of a lost tooth. This will in turn act as a support to a replacement tooth or bridge that resembles a natural tooth in appearance. An implant consists of the implant, implant abutment and fixed restoration. Dental Implant Procedure

Placing the Implant
An incision (socket) is made in the jawbone in which to place the implant body.
Once the implant body is placed into the jawbone, the incision is closed.

Attaching the abutment
Over the next several months, the implant body and the surrounding bone are allowed to bond firmly together.
An incision is made again to attach an extension (abutment) to support an artificial tooth on the implant body. Then, a mould of the mouth and teeth is made to produce the artificial tooth.

Placing the fixed restoration
An artificial tooth is produced.
The artificial tooth is placed on the extension attached to the implant body.
Consequently, you can achieve a natural-looking appearance and comfortable chewing ability.
To keep your implant in place for a long time, at-home oral care and regular dental visits are required.
Dental Implant Treatments
Single tooth replacement with conventional Dental Implants
Conventional bridge
The conventional fixed partial denture (fixed bridge) requires that your dentist drills down two or more adjacent teeth to create space for the crowns of the prosthetic teeth. Placing a bridge on natural teeth increases the functional forces that are placed upon them and makes the use of floss between the teeth more difficult. Conventional bridges may need to be replaced if the supporting teeth develop cavities or periodontal disease. In a certain percentage of instances, while preparing the adjacent teeth for crowns (i.e. drilling down a tooth), the preparatory procedure will cause the nerve of the tooth to die and require root canal treatment to eliminate infection of the nerve.
Implant retained crown
An implant-retained crown avoids the need to restore the adjacent teeth and also replaces the support that is lost with the missing tooth. This allows normal flossing as if the replacement implant were a natural tooth. The implant is placed in the position of the missing tooth. When the implant is stable and ready for loading, an abutment can be attached to the implant that will connect the final crown to the implant. An impression is made to record the contours of the abutment or the position of the implant top. A crown is then fabricated and fixed in place using cement or screws. An implant crown is not susceptible to cavities but may develop complications if oral hygiene is not maintained. The implant restoration should be routinely evaluated in time intervals that are determined by the conditions of the remaining natural teeth and the implant.
Immediate replacement of a missing tooth with dental implants
If you know you are about to lose a tooth, or if you have suddenly lost a tooth, there may be a chance that you can get your tooth replaced with an ‘immediate’ dental implant. Immediate dental Implants allow for the need for only one surgery with both the extraction of the tooth and placing the implant both at once. A temporary crown is placed which also allows the gum to heal. The temporary crown is later replaced after 1-2 months with a permanent crown.

This allows for faster results and decreases the discomfort experienced by the patient. Not everyone can undergo an immediate dental implant it depends on many factors such as biting load and bone patterns.
